Lakewood Elementary Reading Program

Reading can be rewarding and we would love to make it a daily habit. The LES Library has found many businesses and organizations that know the benefits of a child who reads, and want to reward them for it. Therefore, each month the library will make a reading log available for you and your child to fill out. At the end of the month, submit or return the reading log to your student’s homeroom teacher. Every child earns one raffle ticket for every month they turn in a log. Students will get the opportunity put the raffle tickets in to win extra prizes at the reading celebration at the end of the year. Students that turn in a reading log for every month during the program (October through April) will be entered to win an e-reader and/or a gift card.

Students in K-4 and staff will be challenged to turn in one reading log a month between the months of October 1st and April 30th.  Each child will read at their own pace and record every day they read at least 20 minutes outside of the school day.

Students can be read to, they can listen to audio books, read books on their own, read magazines, graphic novels, read anything with words and even wordless books. The 20 minutes does not have to be read at one time. Students can break it up and read 5 minutes before school, 5 minutes after school etc… as long as it equals 20 minutes total for the day.

Fill out the monthly paper copy of the reading log and return it at the end of the month.

Important Information:

  • Paper reading logs will be distributed in Wednesday folders at the start of each month and as needed. You can also find a copy of the reading logs here:
  • Color or mark out each day your child reads 20 minutes or more outside of the school day on the paper calendar log.
  • If your child has read for at least 20 minutes for at least 20 days and recorded them on his/her reading log, return the log to your child’s teacher at the end of that month for a reward on their next library day visit. Make sure your student’s name is on the log and as well as a parent signature.

Turn in days will be posted in the Wildcat Newsletter.

It is that easy! This is an optional program for your child to encourage a love for reading. At the end of the school year we will celebrate with a reading celebration and give out awards. Be sure to subscribe to my website at to get library updates.

Have fun reading!   ~Ms. Taylor, LES Librarian
