Here's what you should know:

Testing Information

Note to Parents/Guardians: Please read through the entire page before determining if you wish to refer your child for testing to qualify for Gifted and Talented services in Tomball ISD. Keep in mind that testing can be stressful for your child and expensive for the district. Also, be advised that there are specific testing windows and date requirements for each window that are strictly adhered to.

Quick Overview of the

Referral and Testing Process:

*Referrals are taken twice a year. The FALL is reserved for students NEW to TISD. The SPRING is for all students. Kindergarten students are ALL screened in December and a referral is not required.

*Return the Letter for Permission to Test (only given out during the testing windows).

*Complete the Parent Inventory and return.

*Students are assessed using ability and/or achievement tests. No specific dates will be given out ahead of time for this test. Testing occurs during the listed testing windows.

*Results of testing are reviewed by the GT Specialist, Campus Selection Committee (CSC) and District Selection Committee (DSC).

*Following the Campus and District Selection Committee meeting, results are sent home via letter. Results are not available until after the CSC and/or DSC have met.

Permission Form: Parents must request testing via email or written letter to receive a testing permission form. This Letter for Permission to Test is given out ONLY during the referral windows listed below and must be returned in order for any testing to occur.

Gifted: What does it really mean?

Parents are encouraged to explore the following resources before requesting testing for the Gifted and Talented program.

The National Association for Gifted Children to explore the definitions of giftedness.

The Texas Association for Gifted and Talented has a great library of resources for parents on giftedness.

The Texas Education Agency is also a great resource.

Helpful Reminders

  • Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats well and is ready for school each day. You will not be given a schedule of your child's testing days so please be prepared.
  • Students who were new to the district and tested for GT in the Fall of 2019 are not eligible for GT testing this spring.

Testing/Survey Procedures:

The State of Texas mandates that school districts use several different means of accessing for gifted services. Tomball ISD uses two recognized ability tests and one recognized achievement tests along with teacher and parent surveys. Test scores from comparable testing instruments administered by other districts may also be used.

In Tomball ISD, students must attain a 126+ on an ability test AND 95% or above on any one subject on an achievement test. Teacher and parent input is also collected.  Parents can provide testing scores from previous districts or certified testing professionals. Those scores must be equivalent to the testing instruments we use within the district and they must be recent (within the past two years.)  Students cannot be tested using the same testing instrument within a year of the last administration.

Reminder: Testing requests can be made anytime during the year, however testing will only occur during the testing window. In order to follow TISD GT qualification guidelines, all testing data from prior schools must be from within the prior 2 years and must be nationally normed test results.  A student will only be tested once in any given 12 month period. All testing results are valid for 2 years.

Fall Testing Grades 1-4

Students New to the District as of April 2019

Fall GT Testing is reserved for NEW TISD students in grades 1-4 as of April 2019. Parent permission is required in order to complete the testing procedures. If the permission form is not received by September 11, 2019, students will not have another opportunity to be screened until the spring. Additionally, a student who is tested in the fall will not be able to be tested again until the spring semester of the following school year. If you have any prior testing data from a previous school, please send a copy to Jennifer Bull as soon as possible. Keep in mind that if your child does qualify for GT services, a schedule change may be necessary to provide proper services.  Your child is not automatically placed into the GT program in TISD without review of prior test scores and possible further testing.  If further testing is needed, it will be completed in September.

If you would like to nominate your student for testing and are NEW to TISD, please email  and you will be contacted with additional information.

Important Dates

Referral Deadline: September 11, 2019 (Parent Inventory and Permission to Test form must be completed and received by this date)

Fall District Selection Committee Meeting: October 4, 2019 (depending on when testing is completed)

Results: All results will be reported via letter AFTER the dates of the Fall DSC meeting.

**Parents should be aware that a student tested during this window may not be tested again until the spring of the next school year.**

Kindergarten Screening & Testing

*ALL Kindergarten students are screened

*NO referral is required by the parent

Kindergarten screening for Gifted & Talented services will be conducted automatically towards the end of the fall semester. There is no action required on the part of Kindergarten parents.  The campus GT Specialist will evaluate student performance on various applicable tasks to screen for academic giftedness as set forth by TISD.

If your Kindergarten student meets the minimum criteria on the screening tasks, you will be notified in writing that he/she qualifies for further testing, and you will receive the required forms to complete.  In that case, you will need to return the required forms to your campus GT Specialist in order for your child to continue in the evaluation process. Those forms must be received by the deadline indicated in the letter. Eligible students who return the required forms by the deadline will continue with the testing process starting in January.  Some students may require more testing than others and individual results will be sent home via letter after the District Selection Committee meets.

Important Dates

Screening Window: December 2019

*There is a PDF document available on the right that tells more about the TISD Kindergarten screener.
